Canon Character Information
Appearance: Vax is an attractive male half-elf. He has slightly pointed ears, long black hair, and a tendency to wear black. He has one ear pierced with a gold ring and there’s a burned in handprint on his back that covers what used to be a tattoo signifying allegiance to the Clasp, his world’s thieves’ guild. There’s also a small tattoo of the elvish letters for ‘VM’ on his wrist.

Personality: Vax encompasses both light and dark. He tends to wear his emotions on his sleeve- even if he’s not talking about it, you can tell if he’s happy or sad by the way he’s acting. A happy Vax is laughing, joking, and pranking his friends. A sad Vax is withdrawn, quiet, and refusing to engage unless he absolutely has to.

If there’s one relationship that defines Vax’s life, it’s his relationship with his twin sister, Vex’ahlia. They are so tightly knit together that it’s nearly impossible to separate them. They are rarely apart for any length of time- the first time they’d been separated for more than a day was during their trial for the Slayer’s Take, when they were assigned to separate teams. During times of stress or fear, they cling to each other, and when Vex was killed by a trap, Vax was willing to give up his own life to bring her back.

That’s an event which had a great effect on another facet of Vax’s personality. Due to his half-elven heritage and his upbringing, Vax has had a difficult time finding somewhere he feels like he belongs, or a purpose in his life. The only real goal he had in his life was to protect his sister and stay with her at all times. Offering himself to the Raven Queen opened up a new path for him- as her chosen agent in the world, he works to stop those who pervert destiny for their own ends and those who seek to evade death. While he may not have been an enthusiastic convert, knowing that he has a destiny and that he is on a good path makes him a lot happier.

Vax is definitely the steadier twin, most of the time, but he definitely feels things deeply and holds grudges. After Vex’s temporary death, Vax was distinctly icy towards the person he blamed for it, their teammate Percy, for a long time- despite having been good friends with him previously.

On the positive side of the steadiness of his feelings, he fell in love with the druid Keyleth, and when he finally told her, he also told her that he was willing to wait and that if she didn’t love him back, it was all right and he didn’t need her to. It’s clear that he likes to take things slow in romance: his relationship with their patron Gilmore, though it was nipped in the bud by his feelings for Keyleth, was progressing at just about the same rate as molasses flowing uphill in January.

It’s funny that someone who’s willing to take his time in matters of the heart tends to hurl himself almost recklessly into dangerous situations. The number of times Vax has run ahead only to nearly die is pretty ridiculous, and he doesn’t seem inclined to stop. He’s never quite gone over the threshold, though, and that’s one of the reasons that the Raven Queen chose him.
